When it comes to miter saws, I prefer to work with sliding compound miter saws rather than non-sliding models.
The DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw has this useful sliding function. The sliding function lets me cut larger pieces of wood more easily. Tired of flipping your work piece?
The Dewalt DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw has a double bevel, This lets you cut bevels without having to flip your work piece.
It just made sense to add to the list, so I decided to add it to the list of miter saws I wanted to review.
Who wants to flip their work all the time? When I am on the job site, I want the ability to save time, get in and out quickly and get paid. Not having to flip my work to make larger cuts is a real time saver!
Considered to be a versatile compound miter saw ideal for professionals, amateurs and everyone in between, this makes compound miter saw a very versatile tool for every level of carpenter.
The DEWALT DWS780 promises to be powerful and precise enough to handle cutting jobs ranging from fine woodwork to deck building.
The powerful 15-amp motor which cuts through wood at speeds of up to 3800 rpm and the advanced LED light are just two of the features that should help the DEWALT DWS780DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw deliver on its promises. Let’s have a more detailed look at what this miter saw has to offer.
Able to do a variety of jobs
I work on a wide variety of woodworking projects.
From framing, to trim work, stair railings/stairs and custom cabinetry. So, it makes perfect, logical sense to have a versatile sliding compound miter saw.
A versatile miter saw is pretty much a necessity, especially when you need to cut larger pieces.
Whereas you’re limited by the size of pieces you can cut with most mid-range miter saws, the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw will cut up to 16 inches at a 90-degree angle. That’s pretty dang impressive and makes it a truly versatile miter saw that can be used for a wider variety of jobs.
Save time on the job
One of the features that impressed me the most on the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw is its ability to cut horizontal miters and vertical bevels at the same time.
Do you know how much time that save you on the job? This feature should make more complex cutting jobs much faster and more manageable. The cutting width is also increased with this model due to its sliding feature. Remember that time is money.
Of course, there is a laser on the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw, but I do not use it.
I am old school and just prefer not to use the laser.
But this saw has an innovative feature that is considered to be even better than a laser guide system; a laser will typically show a line on one side of the blade, but the XPS system casts a shadow of the blade showing you precisely where the cut will be made.
What I like even more about this alignment system is the fact that, unlike a laser guide system, it does not require any re-calibration when you change blades.
Whenever I cut common angles such as 45 or 22.5 degrees, I find that having preset bevel and miter stops makes the task that much easier.
The DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw comes with the most common miter and bevel positive stop, This particularly helpful when you are making repeat cuts with the same angles.
This is perfect when I am doing trim work and saves me a lot of time. Once you select the angle you need, you simply lock it in with the cam-lock miter button.
There is also a handy miter detent override feature that can be used to accurately adjust the angle.
In addition, with this being a dual bevel machine, there is no need to flip the work piece when cutting bevels. You just flip the saw to the left or right instead.
This saves time and helps you achieve more accurate cuts when cutting things like crown molding and trim pieces.
Although my old Craftsman compound miter saw still works, I need a way to cut wider boards (wider than the craftsman 8″ max) without trying to flip the board or cut on the table saw.
This DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw at 16″ cut depth handles a much broader range of board widths and is very accurate.
TIME SAVER – No need to flip work when cutting bevels.
LASER – Has laser (but I don’t use it)
MITER CUTS – This saw has the ability to cut horizontal miters and vertical bevels at the same time
SAW ARM JUMPS – When you drop the blade down to the cut, position your cutie and hit the trigger. The saw is so powerful that the saw arm jumps down into the wood before you’re ready. Make sure that you pull the trigger well above the work piece before bringing it down for the cut.
WORK BENCH – A second negative would be the depth necessary for setting this up on a work bench. I have a 24″ deep work bench and it won’t fit.
You need about 36″ bench depth. This is kind of inherent in all the sliding miter saws though, just a little worse on this one due to the 16″ cut depth.
I added extra wood to the top of my work bench to accommodate the extra depth if I’m using it on the bench (I also bought the Dewalt stand, awesome!).
SLIDING MOTIONS GETS GUMMED UP – The 2 rods that the ball bearings ride on for the sliding motion get gummed up with saw dust.
It seems like all these sliding saws use the same method. It slides very smooth for me out of the box.
Out of caution and because I only use the sliding about 5 to 10% of the time, I added 1″ i.d. conduit insulation to these round rods.
It’s cheap, only $2.50 for 12′, and covers the rods completely, sealing at each end (see pic). They only take a few scones to remove if I need the sliding feature.
I cut the pieces 1/8″ longer than needed so it would be a snug fit. Overall very happy with this purchase, highly recommend!!
The features I like best on the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw are the XPS cross-cut alignment system and the saw’s capacity to cut up to 16 inches. Being able to cut up to 16 inches means that I could tackle a lot more jobs than what I can with my current miter saw.
I can also see the value in having an advanced LED light feature to assist with making more accurate cuts.
I am a bit disappointed that the blade isn’t suitable for fine finishes. But I already have a very nice 90-tooth blade for those kinds of jobs, so I can just pop that one on.
Overall, the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw seems like one heck of a machine.
Although it is on the heavier side, weighing in around 54 pounds. This can make it difficult moving it around the job site many times throughout the day.
It appears that it is more than worth its weight in power and performance.
